Strong Women are Made

Strong Women are Made

By Zareer Patell – Black Belt, Personal and Online Fitness Trainer / Wellness Columnist (since 1972)

Most women invest their time and effort in treadmills, stationary bikes, and elliptical machines.  It’s almost a pattern and many seem far more comfortable sticking to a cardio workout, while avoiding dumbbells altogether.

The hesitation is often rooted in a myth - that lifting weights isn’t for women. That it’s masculine, that it builds bulk, or that it’s simply not necessary. But avoiding strength training is a serious mistake, especially as women cross into their 40s and beyond.

Without muscle training, women (and men alike) face a higher risk of osteoporosis, arthritis, diabetes, and even poor posture and balance. Muscle loss accelerates with age, and if you’re not actively working to build strength, your body pays the price.

Think of muscles as energy banks - when they’re strong, they store and release energy efficiently throughout the day. If you happen to overeat, trained muscles have the capacity to absorb and store excess calories, instead of letting them turn into fat.

So find a trainer who truly understands strength training and your needs. Start learning how to lift. You won’t become bulky - you’ll become resilient, balanced, and empowered.

Strength isn’t a man’s domain - it’s a human need. And yes, you can do it!
