Carbs - Food or Poison?

 Carbs - Food or Poison?

“Carbs - one man’s food, another man’s poison” means that while a diet high in carbohydrates is healthy and beneficial for athletes and physically active children, it can be a poison for many due to individual genetic makeup, metabolic rate, or specific health conditions.

It’s a common thing for those making a valiant effort in making a better physique, a high carb energy-producing nutrient has been heralded as the road to nirvana. For them it’s a physical need for hunger and energy requirements. Workouts trigger a  “runner’s high” - euphoric, calming, and a mood boosting sensation.

But for others - especially those with stressful jobs, - or frequent  travel, sugar can be a quick lift in both mind and body.

This sugar surge of energy experienced is called hyperglycaemia, or the “sugar high”. What follows next is the “crash,” known as hypoglycaemia or the “sugar blues” -  which brings fatigue, irritability, and more cravings. These swings in blood sugar can fuel obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Food on your mind

Be aware, it’s simply a serotonin satisfaction that makes you feel better when you really aren’t physiologically hungry. This adds up to extra calories - and all for the wrong reasons.

Therefore, for such individuals, swapping three large meals for smaller, balanced ones can help stabilise blood sugar and prevent addictive eating patterns.
