Don’t get Older, get Better
Lao-tzu, the Chinese philosopher (1571 BC) said, “ A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.”
And so it is for so many who have missed the fitness revolution of the 80s but have now decided to get on to the fitness bandwagon.
Want to know why so many seniors made the decision to vacate their rocking chairs and pursue the fitness lifestyle? Because they have realised that exercise is better than any anti-aging pill. In fact, a regular fitness program, done in moderation, may be the single most effective way to lengthen and improve the quality of life.
As late as the 1970s, the prevailing medical opinion was that older individuals were untrainable and that exercise provided them with marginal benefits. This myth prevailed that anyone in their sunset years was over the hill.
But today we know that even older individuals who begin a light to moderate physical activity see improvement. Their blood pressure readings drop, percentages of body fat decrease, arm strength improves, and maximum oxygen capacities increase.
Regulated physical activities also help reduce total cholesterol levels and raise the levels of desirable high-density lipoproteins (HDL) cholesterol, keep blood sugar in balance, in addition to building bone and muscle strength.
The only important consideration is that oldsters should exercise less frequently and less intensely. .
