Don’t Sleep Over It.
How much sleep do you really need? - is the question everyone wants to know.
They say we must learn from history. Napoleon, Leonardo da Vinci and Thomas Edison (American Inventor and Businessman) were known to be frugal sleepers - meaning, they were immune to the normal need for sleep - although not a good example coming from history!
Today, many forfeit that last hour of crucial sleep before dawn on account of hectic schedules and long distance travel to work - a luxury they have to sacrifice.
In the past we were told that the function of sleep is to ward off sleepiness. But today, we know that sleep deprivation can have serious consequences. It can derail diets, accelerate aging and throw the immune system off balance, leading to either an underactive state (immunodeficiency) or an over active state (allergies or autoimmune diseases).
An average person theoretically needs eight hours of sleep a night while hard training athletes need about ten hours of sleep.
Sleep less, Eat more
Get this. The less you sleep, the more you may be inclined to eat. Late-night snacking in front of the TV can lead to mindless eating, over consumption, and a disconnect from hunger cues due to distraction.
What to do?
“Stop sitting idle - get up, stand up, and move! Regular physical activity not only energizes your body but also helps regulate your sleep patterns - ensuring deeper, more restorative rest each night. A little effort today leads to better sleep tomorrow.”
