Exercise - a Big Moderator
By today’s standards, excess fat on your body falls into the category of illness by its very nature. More than just a cosmetic problem, obesity is considered one of the high risk factors which kills millions of adults prematurely each year. Studies worldwide show a clear link: the fatter you are, the sicker you become, and the shorter your life expectancy.
In India too, the trend is unmistakable. Obesity has risen two to threefold in just a few decades. Yet we have learnt to coexist peacefully with the condition in various ways. We have clothing stores that offer oversize costumes in plenty - assuming obesity to be politically correct and some food industries are even institutionalising fatness.
The deeper problem lies in the neglect of physical education and nutrition science - not just in schools and colleges, but also in medical training.
Doctors themselves are rarely taught how food and exercise can prevent disease; instead, they are trained to manage symptoms. This patchwork approach offers quick fixes but rarely addresses the true cause.
If doctors had a solid grounding in nutrition, they would be healthier themselves and better equipped to guide patients toward lasting solutions.
This is where exercise becomes a great moderator. Regular workouts not only help reduce weight but also allow the occasional indulgence without guilt. Combined with sound nutrition, exercise can banish obesity and give an unmatched physiological advantage in the pursuit of lasting health and well-being.
