Morning Stiffness? Walk it off!

 Morning Stiffness? Walk it off!

There was a time when jumping out of bed in the middle of the night felt effortless. A sudden knock at the door could wake us, and in seconds we would be standing upright, running, alert, and ready for action. Fast forward a few decades - and things change.

This common phenomenon is part of aging. While “Age is just a number” sounds nice, the truth is our joints do change. Overnight, spinal discs absorb fluid and feel tense, synovial fluid (the body’s joint lubricant) thickens, muscles shorten, and circulation slows. Waste products also build up, leaving us stiff until movement “warms things up.” Cartilage wear and loss of muscle elasticity make the effect stronger with age.

But if stiffness persists beyond 30 minutes or comes with significant pain, swelling, or deformity, it’s a red flag for osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, and that’s when medical evaluation is essential.

The lower body suffers most since knees, hips, and back bear weight and are affected by gravity during rest. Sedentary lifestyle, excess weight, dehydration, poor posture, or nutritional  deficiencies can worsen stiffness.

And while we cannot turn back the biological clock, we can slow its ticking with lifestyle choices. In short- keep moving, keep flexible, and don’t let the rust settle in. Age may slow us, but it doesn’t have to steal our agility.
