Indian culture is a rich tapestry of ancient traditions, religions, languages and art forms, dating back thousands of years to the Indus Valley Civilisation.

But today, we are gaining attention for all the wrong reasons. We are singled out for not following social norms - for uncultured behaviour in public places - poor and distressing body hygiene - glaring and dangerous traffic violations, and the indiscriminate use of loud horns, and the truly atrocious phone manners (barking on the phone) that show little to no consideration for others, and - the list continues.

Recent viral news instances a grave mishap in which a little boy hit his head against a high restriction metal barrier while standing in a moving car with his torso sticking out of the sun roof on GKVK road in Bangalore.

The trend starts in the showroom, during delivery. We often see videos of children with their bodies sticking out of sun roofs as the vehicle is driven out. It’s evident that the parents think it's great entertainment for the children. Actually, it’s like handing over a loaded gun to a child to play with.

Yet another grave mishap that occurred a while ago, in which a new car parked in front of a glass lookout on the first floor of a showroom. The management allowed the car owner to start the car in order to follow the ritual of squeezing lemons under the cars’ tires. Instead, the owner floored the accelerator and the vehicle  jumped out through the glass and crashed onto the payment in front of the show room - upside down. Just think of it.

Such incidents galore are not new to us. The question remains: what is the cause of this almost infantile, unthinkable behaviour? Is it plain  ignorance, basic illiteracy, lack of care in upbringing or the absence of common sense?
