Damocles Sword over a Woman’s Head!
Even though heart disease statistically poses a greater risk, many women fear breast cancer more than any other disease or personal disaster - especially when there’s a worrying family history.
Today, breast cancer isn’t the threat it once was. Ongoing research continues to suggest ways to minimize risk, while early detection and effective treatment options have greatly improved.
Some studies show a strong correlation between the disease and certain potential risk factors, while others find no such link.
The main factors that influence risk include being a woman and getting older, genetic mutations, reproductive history, dense breast tissue, family or personal history of breast or ovarian cancer, past radiation therapy and detrimental lifestyle / dietary habits, to name a few.
But don’t despair - adopt a healthy lifestyle and stay committed to it. Most cancers develop through a two-step process: they begin early in life but remain dormant until something triggers them years later.
Staying lean, exercising, and eating a low-fat, low-sugar diet can reduce lifetime exposure to potential cancer-causing substances. While this may not guarantee prevention, it can certainly improve your odds if the disease does develop.
What was once the Sword of Damocles hanging over a woman’s head can now be managed through periodic check-ups, vigilance and common sense.
In the meantime, the best step forward is to grow stronger by embracing a healthy, active and vigorous lifestyle.
