Our world is experiencing vast and rapid changes - and our deteriorating health is one of the major concerns of this century.
Historical documents show that in the 1960s, the sugar industry funded research that downplayed the risks of sugar and highlighted the hazards of fat as the main cause for heart disease.
Then some nutritionists with vested interests and concerns about the cholesterol content in eggs bashed the egg industry which made the dairy industry promptly launch marketing campaigns promoting a diet that emphasised dairy products over eggs.
Eggs became sinful and sugary cereals took their place while doctors ignored the fact that the body makes its own cholesterol. Cut back on dietary fat and cholesterol, and the body continues to make its own.
From the mid1990s onwards the plant-based alternatives industry campaigned against the traditional milk industry.
This duplicitous behavior of several food companies over many decades reflects a worrisome split-corporate-personality, as they contribute to public health problems and simultaneously engage in activities to prevent them.
The question to ask is, whether processed foods cause obesity and associated health problems or is it our own fault? The answer is self-evident: people make wrong choices and do not want to be accountable for their own actions.
Put another way, with that person who chooses a heap of french fries over a serving of healthy salad, there is not much to discuss or argue. Let him stew in his own juice.
