Whe 1+1 is Better

When 1+1 is Better!

If you trace the lineage of aerobic exercise, it takes you back to the 1970s - the era of the great “running boom,” when outdoor running was popularised as a way to improve health and shed body fat.

A decade later, two new forms of aerobics took centre stage: aerobic dance and the computerised stationary bike. By the 1990s, cardio kickboxing exploded in popularity, earning the title of the ultimate fat-burning workout of the century.

Soon after came a dominant shift in the fitness world: cross-training. Exercise physiologists - many influenced by the bodybuilding community - proposed that combining aerobic exercise with weight training created a well-balanced formula to improve cardiovascular health, regulate body fat, and enhance muscle mass and bone density. In essence, taking the best of both worlds simply worked better.

Cardio clearly outperformed weight training when it came to body-fat control - while the stop-and-go nature of weight training relied heavily on glycogen stores from the blood, muscles, and liver as the primary fuel for muscle growth.

Strategy?

Lift first, then follow with 20 minutes of cardio. You’ll have the energy to hit your target heart rate, and by the time you begin your cardio, you’ll likely be closer to the fat-burning mode you’re aiming for.

This is the science of synergy - and why the combination works.
