Don't Sweeten Your Incredible Endothelium (science)
The single most sophisticated and largest regulatory organ that keeps blood moving smoothly throughout your body and keeps you alive is the “endothelium” - the tissue which forms a single layer of cells lining various organs and cavities, and spans nearly 90,000 km, and covers 3,000–6,000 m². Quietly, it regulates vascular tone, blood pressure, coagulation, inflammation, immunity, and nutrient delivery.
Circulation Research (2017) states: “Endothelial dysfunction is the earliest detectable event in atherosclerosis, preceding plaque formation by years.” This means, we are diagnosing the disease about a decade too late - looking at the wreckage and not at the faulty wiring that started the fire.
Biologically, the endothelium gets leaky. It allows LDLs particles to infiltrate the sub-endothelial space which the drug companies never want you to see. LDL, itself, is harmless. But what happens next is interesting. Oxidised LDL and glycated LDL, in the presence of “high blood sugar” triggers massive inflammatory responses leading to plaque buildup.
A lesser-known fact: the endothelium also releases nitric oxide, a molecule essential for vessel relaxation and insulin sensitivity. High sugar spikes, smoking, ultra-processed foods, and chronic stress shut this system down long before symptoms arise.
So the real first-line therapy may not be pills. Try protecting the endothelium by modifying your diet and lifestyle.
Prevention begins at the lining.
