The “Psychedelic 60” vs the Fitness Boom of America
Those born in the late 20th century missed the negative influence of the “Psychedelic ’60s” - and for good reason. A seizable cross-section of America fell under the spell of a cult-like mindset that viewed responsibility, duty, and discipline as mere “hang-ups” - inhibitions that prevented one from “doing your thing.”
Its followers were made to believe that growing up and maturing were threats to personal freedom. An ethic of liberation prevailed - a distorted spirit that legitimised anything counterculture, much of it dangerous. The era had its rock bands, its oracles, and its drugs. Simply put, many of these deadheads were on a collision course with destruction.
Many of those now-ageing youths of the ’60s - including the entertainment icons who led the parade through song - eventually succumbed to the ravages of drugs.
Fitness Boom
The decade that followed arrived almost like an intervention from providence: the rise of the health, strength, and fitness ethic - the great American fitness boom. It played a significant role in cleaning up the mess left behind by the psychedelic era.
Those who embraced the fitness lifestyle helped build a healthier, stronger population - many outliving their warranty. These greying individuals will increasingly rely on their own physical fitness for a safer passage into the years ahead.
That said: “At any age, you are never too old to start exercising.”
